Fire District Upgrades ISO Rating

The West Jackson Fire Department (WJFD) is proud to announce a major milestone in its ongoing commitment to public safety. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) has officially upgraded the West Jackson Fire District’s Public Protection Classification (PPC®) from Class 3 to Class 2, effective Oct. 1, 2026.
This prestigious rating places West Jackson among the top tier of fire protection agencies nationwide and reflects significant advancements in the department’s response capabilities, staffing, equipment, emergency communications and water infrastructure.
The ISO system evaluates fire protection services on a scale from 1 to 10, with Class 1 representing the highest possible standard. Recent department enhancements—including increased full-time staffing and operational improvements at both district stations—played a vital role in achieving the higher classification score. Beyond signaling higher quality emergency services, a Class 2 ISO rating can help lower property insurance costs.
What the New ISO Rating Means for Property Owners
Potential Insurance Savings: Local residential and commercial property owners could see a 3% to 7% reduction in the fire-protection portion of their homeowners or business insurance premiums.
Automatic System Updates: Insurance carriers should automatically receive updated ISO records in their underwriting software when issuing new policies or processing annual renewals taking effect on or after Oct. 1.
Proactive Verification Encouraged: Because each insurance provider weighs ISO classifications differently, residents and business owners are strongly encouraged to contact their insurance agent to ensure the upgraded Class 2 status is applied to their account.

"This achievement not only reassures our residents that we are equipped and prepared to protect life and property at the highest level, but it also delivers direct financial savings back into the pockets of our taxpayers."
How the ISO Rating is Determined
The ISO PPC program conducts comprehensive field surveys to evaluate four core areas of community fire defense:
Fire Department Operations: Staffing levels, firefighter training, distribution of fire stations, and frontline apparatus and equipment.
Emergency Communications: 911 call handling, dispatch capabilities, and communications infrastructure.
Water Supply System: Inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants, water main capacities, and available water flow throughout the district.
Community Risk Reduction: Fire prevention programs, public education, and building inspection practices.
